Mr. David Cameron. Prime Minister of the United Kingdom: Please accept Galiza as an integral part of United Kingdom when Scotland becomes independent! Petitioning Mr. David Cameron, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. This is, of course, a flippant petition made in jest (that perhaps makes an irresponsible use of a serious organisation intended for worthy causes). Funny enough, it has a precedent in history: the island of Malta successfully requested to become a part of Britain in 1808. What do you make of it? Would you sign it to show your disagreement with the current state of things in Spain or your Anglophilia? Do you think we share so many things with Scotland? Do we Galicians tend to identify more readily with other Europeans (especially the so called "Celtic nations") than with attitudes commonly associated with Spain or some of its regions? http://www.change.org/petitions/mr-david-cameron-prime-minister-of-the-united-kingdom-please-accept-galiza-as-an-integral-part-of-united-kingdom-when-scotland-becomes-independent

  1. I have a better proposal for Mr. Cameron: We are willing to integrate UK as a new province of Galicia.
Now seriously, I think that Galicia is more likely to look like Ireland than UK and, as all of us know, Ireland is not a close friend of UK (so, why are Galician people going to get along with British people?). Besides, I wonder why Scotland wants to get free from UK. Possibly because sharing the state with The English is not pleasant. Therefore, let's dismiss this idea
Despite the fact that I'm proud of being Galician, If I had to choose a new nationality, I would prefer Galicia to become a new province of Canada ( Quebec is trying to get out). Why? This is a multicultural new society integrated by people from different nationalities, where the Spanish people are well-considered (... along with a pretty high employment rate, nice landscapes, etc.)
    Let's think of it.

  2. 750 reached signatures, awesome!!!. Take a look at some interesting comments:

    "Jesus Garcia LUANCO, SWITZERLAND
Hi! I am from Asturias and we would accept to be part of a promotion pack [...]". A promotion pack, like in Carrefour store, good sales strategy from a Asturian-Swiss.

    "Andrés Pedreira BCN, SPAIN
Because Prince Charles looks like born in the Ancares mountains". A Catalan person with Galician surename, typical.

"José Miguel Costa Rico RIBEIRA, SPAIN
And we have augardente and good wines, baby!". How could be translated what this almost fellow countryman of mine says: augardente, because it isn't brandy, liquor or rum. And even worse: brandy/liquor/rum of grass?.

"Celso Alvarez Cáccamo CORUNHA - GALIZA
Scotland é our sexta province! And o outro way around! Physical boundaries estão mortas for defining povos ou nações! Let's unir the Galiza and Scotland por VPN! Longa life a Edinburgh de Compostela! Galescotland vive! Long vida Galescócia!". Nice PortuGalEnglish language from Turkey.

    "Fernando Portas SPAIN
Because I prefer to be lead by a Protestant Woman than a Catholic Man." But, are there non-protest women?.

    "Martiño Placer PONTEDEUME
I want to learn to speak english, and that integration could be a interesting way to do that. jajajajajaja". I need help, could English people understand the "jajajajajaja" or should it be translated?, do they laugh like us?, what a tricky question.

    "Antón Pérez Montero A CORUñA
Fuck María Pita for having repelled the English army 300 years ago. We would be now a pain in the ass to Spain like Gibraltar is." Gibraltar has been a really useful tool for the Spanish goverment along the recent history. Does anyone knows what has happened with the fishermen problems related to the concrete blocks?, because they haven't been removed, have they?.

    "Raúl Rodrigues Seoane SPAIN
Freedom for Galiza!!" I'm afraid this one hasn't understood the petition.

"Raquel González Fernández A CORUñA, SPAIN
Vivamos como Galegos!!" I guess that Gadis ads wouldn't be the same in English.

And finally, how would be this video with Galician accent?:

  3. Instead of becoming independent, I would release our politicians.

  4. I totally agree with Francisco. I like being Galician and Spanish, our history, our people, our habits (at least, most of them). So I think Francisco´s idea could be a good solution.

  5. Release them from where, Francisco? From jail? Oh, ok, you probably mean KICK/THROW/CHUCK them out of the country (or drop them in the middle of the Marianas Trench). Sofía, is loving your contry equivalent of not being critical with it? I take it for granted that most of us feel an afinity for our country of origin and its people, but why do you think more and more people are starting to feel so strongly disaffected?

  6. Of course we must be critical with our country, but starting with ourselves. Are we doing a big effort to improve the situation and show politicians than we're dissappointed with them, or are we watching news on TV sat comfortably on our sofa? Do we really want to change the direction of accurrences, or next time will be the same politicians who will be doing the same things?
